Notes

Hope & Anchor gig listing from Morris Windsor's Facebook (see review below)

This is the correct date of Robyn's post-sabbatical "comeback" gig at the Hope in 1984, billed as "Robyn Hitchcock & Chums" but functionally the band that would become the Egyptians. Some tapes were mislabeled as 29 April, 19 September etc, due to similarities in the numbers (and questionable handwriting)! The song arrangements are quite different from their later versions, mostly due to the existence of keyboard parts courtesy of Roger Jackson, who was an Egyptian for the first couple of albums (Fegmania! and Gotta Let This Hen Out). Fletcher was a former schoolmate and longtime friend of Robyn's; in his written remembrance of the man upon his passing in 2025, he noted Fletcher was an Egyptian for just a handful of gigs (or possibly only this gig) as the sax didn't really fit in.

A UK promotional cutting noted at the time that this was Robyn's first gig in two and a half years.

Appears to have been a benefit show for the Hope & Anchor. Robyn appeared on a compilation album about this time called "Don't Let the Hope Close Down."

Robyn Hitchcock - electric guitar, vocals
Roger Jackson - keyboards
Andy Metcalfe - electric bass, keyboards, vocals
Morris Windsor - drums, vocals
Guest on some songs: James Fletcher - saxophone

35 yrs ago today - one of the first gigs the as yet unnamed Egyptians did...this is extra special to me as eight-week old Tara was there in a baby-sling. And now she goes to gigs all on her own! Thanks to Sten-Ake Isacson of Gothenburg, who was there, for this flyer. 50p more than Tenpole Tudor!
